Peter Groffman to give lecture, “When Yards Look Alike: Ecological Homogenization and Alternative Futures for Urban America” on May 2, 2018

Peter Groffman will give a lecture titled, “When Yards Look Alike: Ecological Homogenization and Alternative Futures for Urban America” on Wednesday, May 2 at 5:30pm in the Environmental Cooperative Barn. This event is free and open to the public.

Expansion of urban, suburban, and exurban land in the US over the past few decades has led to neighborhoods across the country appearing more similar to each other than the native ecosystems they replaced. Groffman will discuss the effects of urban homogenization on biodiversity, soil, and nutrient processing, microclimate, and hydrography.

Groffman has worked at the Cary Institute, CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, and Brooklyn College. He has authored IPCC and NCA reports.

This event is sponsored by the Environmental Cooperative at the Vassar Barns, NYS DEC Hudson River Estuary Program; and the Environmental Studies, Urban Studies, Biology, Earth Science and Geography Departments.
