David K. Jemiolo

Associate Professor of Biology and Director of Interdepartmental Courses

  • Ph.D. 1981 Biophysics, University of Virginia
  • B.S. 1972 Physics, University of Massachusetts at Lowell

Research Interests

He is currently studying canine cancers in collaboration with Dr. Joseph Impellizeri, DVM, DACVIM.  The research uses RT-PCR to measure the expression of genes such as HER-2, estrogen receptor and cycoloxygenase-2 in canine tumors.   In the past he has studied the role of post-transcriptional modifications of ribosomal RNA in Escherichia coli, research that was supported by a FIRST Award from the National Institutes of Health. He also did work on the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. He is a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honor society, and Sigma Xi. With Dr. Steven M. Theg (U.C. Davis), he co-authored a student solutions manual, study guide, and problems book to accompany Biochemistry by Garrett and Grisham.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Jemiolo has been a member of the biology department since 1986. In addition, he is an active participant in the interdepartmental Biochemistry Program and has served as the program's director. His teaching interests include biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology.  He has taught a forensics course with Dr. S. Kaur of chemistry and with Dr. Rossi he is developing a course titled The Culture and Chemistry of Cuisine.
